We used nail polish as a base coat on our acorns as we love the jewel like colours and sheen that it provides, but there is no reason why you shouldn't use whatever paint you have to hand.

We stuck pins into one end of our acorns so that we had something to hold on to while we painted them, it is also worth planning where you will leave them to dry before you start, as nail polish in particular takes some time - we used a florist oasis to stick the pin end in to to support ours.

Once our base coats were dry (we gave ours two coats) we used a combination of more nail polish, sharpies and glitter to add more detail to our jewels in the form of spots and swirls, and then stuck their caps on.

We are planning on making a Twig Christmas Tree embellished with Epson salts and lights which these little jewels will hang on.

As you can tell from the lack of words these really are the simplest things to make, but we think they make adorable decorations!

Sarah, these are so adorable. They look like little jewels. So many cool things that you could use these for;Tree decorations, placed on a wreath, napkin holders, even add them to greenery around a candle stick or on your Christmas table! I am going to be looking for acorns, these are just too cool! Love the look the nail polish gives them, great idea. Thanks for sharing it!

Thanks Nikki, your napkin ring is a genius idea – I’m definitely going to try that. I love the look the nail polish gives them too, reminds me of enameling 🙂

My friend and I are going to make these! I have a bunch of old nail polish and beads that I think would look great. We are also going to create something cute using sweetgum balls. Happy crafting!
